Exploring County-Level Health Data

Visit http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/, a database of county-level data provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Before Beginning the Write-Up:

1. On the homepage of the website, select “Explore Health Rankings,” then “Overview” from the drop-down menu.
2. Scroll down to the section titled “Compare Counties.” Select a state county that is familiar to you (e.g., a county that you have lived in or spent a significant amount of time in).
3. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the layout of the website and the health-related reports on the website.
a. At the state level, what information is provided in the “Overview,” “Rankings,” and “Measures” tabs?
b. After selecting a county from the state map, what measures of “Health Outcomes” and “Health Factors” are available to you?
c. Note that if you click on a particular Health Outcome or Health Factor, you will get a description of how the outcome or factor was defined and measured.

————————————————————————————————————————–

1. Introduce the county that you chose and briefly explain why you are interested in this county.

2. Report your county’s overall ranking for “Health Outcomes” (these are bolded numbers beside the list of counties on the left-hand panel under the “Rankings” tab). You need to know how many counties are in your state to know how your county compares. Are rankings of health factors within your county similar or different from one another? What particular health outcomes or health factors stand out?

3. Next, look at the items listed under “Social & Economic Factors” for your county. Select a few factors to report. For example, what percent of children are in poverty? If there is a small graph icon under the “Trend” column for a socioeconomic measure, click on the icon. Based on the graph, over the past decade or two, has this socioeconomic factor changed across time in your county? According to the graph, how does this compare to your state? How does this compare to the US?

4. Explain how these social and economic factors impact health. What kinds of risk factors or resources might underlie the links between social conditions and health?

5. Based on your own observations within the county, are you surprised by the estimates on the website? From your own observations, are there other social or environmental factors that affect health which are not directly shown on the website (e.g. quality of the neighborhoods, schools, environmental stressors)?

6. Finally, think about improvements that could be made to your county to improve health outcomes. What elements of neighborhoods, schools, households, or other contexts would you focus on improving?
